Two weekends ago, on April 11, 2026, the Elementary Ski Races happened, and there were lots of ready and focused athletes from grades 1 through 5. The races took place on the snowy, sticky First Hill Trails. To get there, the kids first had to drive up a long, bumpy road in the back of a vehicle, then they walked down to the start line.
That day, there were big puffy snowflakes, and the snow was very wet. It was cloudy but bright, and somehow warm but cold. These snowy conditions made it harder for the kids to ski faster, as it also probably made the trail a little slippery.
All the kids did a great job. During the race, the kids chased a pretty pink unicorn and a burger (older students dressed in costumes). The pink unicorn and the burger are like a tradition; the costumes are used so that the kids know where to ski and to help them ski faster. We interviewed some of the kids and asked them what they thought about the costumes, and they said “they were cool.”
The races started off with the 1st grade skiing one lap around a small loop. Then, 2nd grade students did two laps around the loop. Next, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders did one lap around the whole main course.
Overall, there were lots of strong finishes and skiers will be recognized at the April Student of the Month celebration.
Congratulations, skiers! You did a great job out there.
